Blank MICR Settings
Do any other banks have blank MICR detection settings on their client scanners that prohibits them from depositing a check without proper MICR? We run into a lot of issues with this due to the increase in people printing valid checks without MICR ink, and so we are constantly turning this feature on and off for our customers so they can get their checks deposited. We are considering turning that feature off since we have an extensive application and annual review process for these clients, but are curious what other banks are doing.

Another option would be to have your clients scan the MICR rejects with your mobile applicaiton (if available).  Mobile device apps would typlically read the MICR line with OCR and provide much improved read results.

Non MICR printed checks are a challenge as MICR ink is still required / provided on checks sourced from bank check ordering channels. As mentioned it is the home printing of checks that create non MICR checks in the clearing system. Most if not all physical check scanning devices are expecting MICR based prinitng of the MICR lines - and while one or two low signal MICR characters can be read using a dual MICR / OCR read process - the absence of MICR on a check usually indicates a potential problem and almost always requires manual keying to get into the system. Using a moble deposit platform may be an alternative. Removing the requirement for MICR ink on RDC deposited checks using a physical check scanner may be an option - but think this is not commonly done as the quality of read is lower which leads to more manual keying.
