Multi-Strip Images
A problem/question I have been asked recently (by banks) relates to scanners producing multi-strip images.
This is - they think - "an old technology that isn’t usually seen in exchanges." But there are reports they do occur and then the exchanges will not accept them.
There are also anecdotal statements that when image/copy quality checking is done some scanners generate multi-strip images where the strip size is dependent on the size of the receive buffer used to buffer decoded image data.
Some say it is is also dependent on the speed of the host CPU and i/o performance.
Can anyone provide first-hand information about this subject?

Re: Multi-Strip Images
by multi strip do you mean "strips" of check image oriented horizontally as in the direction of check movement at time of capture?
if this is the case, i suspect the strips appear to be about half inch high. this is a fairly common hardware problem where the scanner loses the start of the document on sequential scans so the scans appear offset. Sorry, i should tell you each check image is actually a number of scans taken in line with the check movement thru the scanner. each scan is supposed to start at the leading edge of the check. if the scanner has a problem (most likely it is simply dirty or the lamps are dimming) the scans may start at eratic times.
speaking of lamps, this is a critical topic. white light has all colors in it. new lamps try to be white, as they age they lose colors, certain checks will be worse than others depending on the color etc. desktop scanners often use colored lamps which manifest similar problems.
SO first clean the machine, then change the lamps.

Re: Multi-Strip Images
Thanks for the response. The anecdotal data originally mentioned was via a bank business manager/operations committee person hearing only about these problem images hitting the exchanges. Now that you mention this possibility, i.e., simple maintenance - this also correlates to what may well be old (but still viable) scanning equipment originally installed/being used pre-full-blown-electronification.
